Private tutor in Birmingham, AL

Education

I graduated from the University of Phoenix (Michigan Campus) in 2001 with a BS degree in Business Management. My GPA was 3.48 on a 4.0 scale. This was an accelerated program that allowed me to complete my requirements in three years while I worked full time. I was also able to get credit for my previous training and work experience.

Experience

Currently, I work with both the Birmingham and Leeds Public School Systems (Pre-k through 8th grades beginning with the 2014/2015 school year) as a Substitute Teacher. I have been a member of the Tutoring Ministry at my church, where I work with students from the 1st through 12th grade, for more than six years. My primary area of expertise is in Language Arts. I have also worked one-on-one with students to help them enhance their interpersonal skills. Effective interpersonal skills are proven to be essential to success in school, the work place, and life in general. Much of my teaching and tutoring background comes from my experience as a Corporate Quality Consultant and Trainer where I designed, developed, and facilitated numerous training workshops for adults while employed at DTE Energy in Detroit MI. My experience working with children also includes the three years I spent as a presenter with the Junior Achievement Program that DTE Energy participated in as a business partner. I worked with middle school students during this time. My twenty plus years of consulting, training, and other work experiences have helped me understand what is needed to succeed in school, on the job, and personally. My approach is to help the student find his/her own answers by coaching and guiding them through it. I love being a teacher and tutor because it gives me an opportunity to share my knowledge, skills and training with our next generation of leaders. It gives me a great deal of pleasure when I see a student’s reaction after something I have shared with him or her clicks and they smile back at me. I know then that I have been successful in my efforts to help them gain the knowledge and skills they need to excel.

Hobbies

I am an avid reader. I believe that our students need to be encouraged to read more. The better they can read, the better their speaking and writing skills will be. I also enjoy traveling. There is so much to learn from visiting other areas of this great country. I feel blessed to have had this opportunity. I have been able to share some of my experiences with my students as part of teaching them. Another thing I would like to share with potential students is I am very patient with my students. Everyone learns differently and as a Tutor/Teacher/trainer, I try to work with my students at their level. I also believe very strongly that students should be guided to find answers on their own. I encourage them to think for themselves and discover for themselves by asking questions rather than giving them the answers. My reward is the smile on their faces when they reach the right answer.
